What is Lantern Festival?

The Lantern Festival (元宵節 Yuán Xiāo Jié) is a Chinese festival celebrated on the fifteenth day of the first month in the lunar year in the Chinese calendar. It is not to be confused with the Mid-Autumn Festival, which is also sometimes known as the "Lantern Festival" in locations such as Singapore, Malaysia. During the Lantern Festival, children go out at night to temples carrying paper lanterns and solve riddles on the lanterns (猜燈謎 Cāi Dēng Mí). It officially ends the Chinese New Year celebrations.

In ancient times, the lanterns were fairly simple, for only the emperor and noblemen had large ornate ones; in modern times, lanterns have been embellished with many complex designs. For example, lanterns are now often made in shapes of animals.The Lantern Festival is also known as the Little New Year since it marks the end of the series of celebrations starting from the Chinese New Year.

History of Lantern Festival

The 15th day of the 1st lunar month is the Chinese Lantern Festival because the first lunar month is called yuan-month and in the ancient times people called night Xiao. The 15th day is the first night to see a full moon. So the day is also called Yuan Xiao Festival in China. According to the Chinese tradition, at the very beginning of a new year, when there is a bright full moon hanging in the sky, there should be thousands of colorful lanterns hung out for people to appreciate. At this time, people will try to solve the puzzles on the lanterns and eat Yuan Xiao (元宵, glutinous rice ball) and get all their families united in the joyful atmosphere.

Sky lantern

Sky lanterns are airborne paper lanterns traditionally found in some Asian cultures. They are constructed from oiled rice paper on a bamboo frame, and contain a small candle or fuel cell composed of a waxy flammable material. When lit, the flame heats the air inside the lantern, thus lowering its density causing the lantern to rise into the air. The sky lantern is only airborne for as long as the flame stays alight, after which the lantern floats back to the ground. Sky lanterns are also referred to as sky candles or fire balloons, however this term is also used to refer to balloon munitions used during World War II.

In ancient China, sky lantern were strategically used in wars. However later on, non-military applications were employed as they became popular with children at carnivals. These lanterns were subsequently incorporated into festivals like the Chinese Mid-Autumn and Lantern Festivals. Pingsi in the Taipei County of Taiwan holds an annual Lantern Festival in which sky lanterns are released.

舞龍舞獅喜迎金虎浪漫藝地中國中學春「藝」濃

浪漫藝地中國中學訊：

今年二月真是一個充滿藝術及歡樂氣息的月份，本校結合地方民間及政府組織舉辦了一連串春節相關文化表演活動，使浪漫藝地市（Dumaguete City）處處充滿了年節氣氛與藝文風味，這不僅提升了學生們對於華人文化的體認，也讓本市居民對於華人新年節慶有更進一步的了解。

承蒙中華民國僑務委員會、台北經濟文化辦事處的大力贊助，補助本校一條嶄新的夜光龍和兩頭精緻的金獅。師生們無不讚嘆龍獅道具的精美華麗，每每中學部學生在體育場練習時，許多下課經過的學生都會受其吸引而佇足欣賞。去年七月，僑委會遴選文化巡迴教師賴弘修老師蒞臨本校指導武術、舞龍舞獅等專業技巧，先前經由名師訓練的成果也在一次次的練習中逐一顯現，學生們道具甫一上手便將舞龍舞獅表演得活靈活現。

這一系列的慶祝活動首先由二月七日本省國家藝術節開幕的迎春踩街活動來展開，邀請本市中學生參加遊行，本校師生無不精心妝扮、身穿各式中國傳統服飾遊行踩街，樣貌多元、姿態優雅，令人目不暇給。遊行的隊伍由彩龍、校旗開道，鼓樂隊隨後，緊接著是全體中學師生，氣勢磅礡的彩龍在市區街道中來回穿梭表演，民眾驚呼聲不斷，一些外地來的歐美遊客更紛紛拿起相機拍照留念。浩浩蕩蕩的遊行隊伍一路上搭配著雄壯的鼓樂隊行進，而其他學校中學生亦使出渾身解數演出，帶給浪漫藝地市區一片喜氣洋洋。

二月十二日除夕前一天，本校應本省觀光局之邀參加本省「第一屆國際觀光藝術節」開幕儀式，參加的國家有美國、英國、加拿大、挪威、瑞士、西班牙、伊拉克、印度、韓國、德國、馬來西亞及台灣。Negros Oriental省長Emilio Macias致詞後，有優美的樂器演奏表演，而我們有台灣僑委會贈送的兩頭金獅，加上學校原有的六頭玩具獅，組成一個俏皮、祥和、喜樂的獅子家族，精彩的表演可想而知，而舞龍表演則是放在壓軸，由中學生操作的彩龍在會場內來回舞動飛奔，搭配氣勢磅礡的音樂，讓來自各國的觀眾看得目瞪口呆、拍手叫好，節目結束後又到各國博覽會場表演採青（紅包），兩頭金獅表現出高難度的採青技巧，咬到紅包後俏皮逗趣的模樣，不時讓在場觀眾歡笑聲不斷。

除夕當晚則在校內舉行春節聯歡晚會，邀請全校師生、董事會、學生家長以及社會賢達人士一同參與，歡歡喜喜迎接金虎年的到來。巨大的老虎卡通圖案、大福字，以及週邊大紅燈籠、藝術吊飾等裝飾品，營造出具有傳統風味的年節景象，晚會在新年祈福舞蹈中展開，祈求天主賜福帶來一整年的平安喜樂。接著由本校薛振國董事長及校長陳賽琳修女為新春致詞，而後是一連串精彩不間斷的節目演出，由幼稚園部、小學部及中學部各年級，及全體教師們接連表演，內容有新年歌曲、邊疆民謠、民俗舞蹈、扇子舞、舞龍舞獅……等等，由於節目豐富多元，各個精彩，所以全場掌聲不斷、熱鬧非凡，最後聯歡晚會於全體師生大合唱《新年喜洋洋》的歡喜歌聲中結束，散場後仍有許多觀眾意猶未盡地哼唱新年歌曲相互恭賀。

正月初一頭一天（二月十四日），本校全體師生穿戴各式表演服裝，再次遊行，這回不僅有中小學部全體師生的加入，更包含載有幼稚園師生的迎春花車，隊伍陣容聲勢壯大，好不熱鬧。此次遊行由台灣僑委會贈送的兩頭金獅領頭，氣宇非凡的金獅沿途表現出搖擺、跳躍、抓癢、眨眼等各種動作，栩栩如生、可愛逗趣，市民們不時鼓掌叫好，而遊行隊伍的尾端則由本校自製的彩龍墊後，無論是隊伍頭、尾都有精彩可期的表演。

由於表演內容之優質廣受好評，受到市政府邀請於本市廣場再度演出，代表華人文化精髓的舞龍舞獅表演，以及春節聯歡晚會的整套精彩演出，更是跨出校園，於市內年度藝文盛事「Tayada sa Plaza」活動中演出，讓更多菲律賓人能欣賞到精緻的華人文化、音樂、舞蹈與舞龍舞獅藝術之美。

在校內課程方面，僑委會派遣駐校的兩位替代役男江鎮宇老師及黃志超老師，共同設計出一套連結春節的文化體驗課程，內容包羅萬象，介紹春節與十二生肖的由來，放映舞龍舞獅及相關慶典的紀錄影片，中學部則學習書法繕寫技巧、習寫春聯，小學部則進行春節裝飾品的美勞活動，除了藝術課程之外，更安排了華人年節美食的體驗活動，準備發糕、年糕和福餅等食物供學生品嚐，學生們在華語課邊學邊吃不亦樂乎。

在各式各樣的新春慶祝活動中，無論是藝文表演或文化課程，中國中學師生都展現出特有的青春與活力，在現代生活中仍能如此體現與傳承華人文化的傳統底蘊，更顯得彌足珍貴。這成功的背後其實是來自於許多人的努力，因此浪漫藝地中國中學校長陳賽琳修女代表全體師生向中華民國僑務委員會以及贊助本活動的僑界人士，致上最高且最誠摯的謝意，感謝他們在活動各方面的鼎力支持，才使得這一連串的慶祝活動能順利地舉行並且完美地達成，以實現本校多年來不遺餘力推展僑教的目標與宗旨。

Its Past and Present

Holy Cross High School was originally established as Dumaguete Chinese School on July 15, 1928.

It came into existence through the efforts of the Dumaguete Chinese Chamber of Commerce, the moving spirits behind which were the men who composed its Board of Directors of 1926-1928 and who have since then been considered as the founders of the school, namely, Mariano L. Uy Matiao (President), Abdon Velez(Vise-President), Cang Yuco(Treasurer), Que Teck Tuen(Secretary), Gregorio Pascual(English Secretary), Uy Yao Khun, Ong Chiong Chi, Sun Ug Son, Santiago Chiu Bontin, Hoo Wing, Yu Yiok Lin, Jo Tian Sang, Tan Tang Sia, Sun Un Po, Tan Ching Tak, and Du Quinco(Directors).

The purpose of establishing this school then was to give the youth of the Chinese community in Dumaguete as well as in the Province of Negros Oriental an opportunity to learn not only a primary knowledge about the Philippines and the rest of the world, but also to acquire knowledge about China and its rich culture which emphasizes the need of cultivating desirable traits and virtues in the development of one’s character.

Located at the corner of Santa Catalina and Noblefranca Streets, the school started its operation in 1928 as a primary school with one principal, three teachers and 40 pupils. The schoolhouse was a small, modest one-storey wooden building with scanty furniture and equipment. A shanty-type house built of wood and nipa served as the dwelling for the principal. Between the schoolhouse and the house was a vacant lot which was used as the playground. The late Santiago Chiu Bontin was then the chairman of the school’s Board of Trustees. The late Mr. Chiu Yu Po was the school principal.

From such a humble beginning, the school has gradually grown, developed and has now become one of the best equipped and well-known high schools in our locality.

Here are some of the important developments that took place during its last eighty years of existence.

THE SCHOOL NAME Founded as Dumaguete Chinese School in 1928, the school was renamed Dumaguete Chinese High School after its high school department was created, which took place during the administration of the late Mr. Chi-sin Tsai, the principal who served from 1949 to 1956. The school was again renamed Holy Cross High School in 1968, during the incumbency of Reverend Father Joseph Wang as the principal. The renaming was made to correct the wrong impression of the public that the school is only open to students of Chinese ancestry.

SCOPE OF INSTRUCTION Originally established as a primary school, the school has become a high school after the high school department was added to its scope of instruction during the tenure of the late Mr. Chi-sin Tsai. Since then, the school has been offering: 1) a two-year kindergarten class in Chinese; 2) a six-year elementary course in Chinese and English; 3) a three-year junior high school course in Chinese; 4) a four-year high school course in English.

SUBJECTS In compliance with the requirement of the Ministry of Education and Culture, all subjects that are being taught in all the private schools throughout the country in elementary and secondary levels have been similarly included and updated in the curriculums of this school. The Chinese subjects which are offered as a foreign language include Chinese language, Composition and Literature.

BUILDINGS AND FACILITIES In 1949, the old, one-storey wooden schoolhouse and the old house used as the principal’s dwelling were all demolished. In 1950-1951, through the efforts of the Board of Trustees, under the chairmanship of the late Mr. Tan Un Jo, new buildings were erected in the school campus.

The main school building, a concrete, modernized two-storey structure with a roof garden, provides spacious, well-ventilated working offices for the administrative and teaching staffs, classrooms and rooms for other uses.

A three-storey wooden dormitory for girls and another three-storey wooden dormitory for boys, constructed at the back of the school campus, provide not only sufficient rooms for such purpose, but also rooms for use as: living quarters for the School Director, lodgings for lady teachers, working-class room for Home Arts Department for girls, Citizen Army Training (CAT) and Scout’s room, working-class room for Practical Arts Department for boys, laboratory room for chemistry, biology and physics classes, storeroom for school equipment, janitors’ living quarters and kitchen.

In the center of the ground and second floors of the boys’ dormitory building, a two-storey high stage has also been erected for use to hold commencement exercises, musical and literary programs. The stage faces a large, sheltered, light-equipped, cement-floored gymnasium which also serves as a basketball court. Adjacent to it is an open-air cement-floored volleyball court which is also used as playground for primary-grade pupils, exercising ground for CAT trainees, practicing ground for the drum and bugle corps. Behind the volleyball court, a renovated toilet with separate divisions for girls and boys, has been daily and sanitarily maintained.

In the second floor of the main building, a library which faces the sea, provides an atmosphere conducive to reading books and other reading materials such as encyclopedias, magazines and newspapers which are orderly displayed. The library is also used once every month at night time by the school’s Board of Trustees and the Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce of Dumaguete City’s Board of Directors for their regular meetings.

The roof garden atop the main building, renovated with a rooftop through the efforts of the Board of Trustees during the chairmanship of Mr. Que Teck Tuen, provides an airy, capacious space for the school to conduct P.E., Health Education and Scouting classes for girl’s Youth Development Training (YDT). It is also used as a social hall for activities like the Juniors-Seniors prom.

ADMINISTRATORS The late Mr. Chiu Yu Po served from 1928 to 1931; the late Mr. Lim Yet Min served from 1931 to 1941; the late Mr. Co Siongchi served as acting principal from 1945 to 1949; the late Mr. Chi-sin Tsai served from 1949 to 1956; the late Mr. Lianghong Po served from 1956 to 1958; Rev. Fr. Joseph Wang served from 1958 to 1969 as the School Director; Rev. Fr. Bartholomew Sun has been serving as the School Director since 1969; Mr. Francisco Macasieb has been serving as the School Principal since 1965.

ENROLLMENT AND FACULTY From the initial number of 40 pupils in 1928, the enrollment has substantially and impressively increased from year to year. From the initial staff of three teachers in 1928, the faculty members has soared to the present number of 20 teachers in the English Department and 6 instructors in the Chinese Department.

STUDENTS’ ACTIVITIES Aside from participating in the required CAT, YDT, and YCAP programs, the students of Holy Cross High School have also joined the school’s basketball team, drum and bugle corps, science club, scout camping and the youth and children’s choir organized under the guidance of their teachers. During the past few years, some students have brought honors competitions in provincial, regional or national levels involving singing, drawing, essay-writing, oration, science quiz bowls and science project making.

BOARD OF TRUSTEES--- 1976 The highest policy-determining body of Holy Cross High School is the Board of Trustees. It is composed of a group of prominent businessmen and outstanding civic leaders in our community. Occupying the top post as Chairman of the Board is Mr. Julio O. Sy, Sr.. Atty. Antonio S. Ramas Uypitching, Sr., and Mr. Gregorio E. Uymatiao, Sr. were elected as Vice-Chairman and Treasurer respectively, with the former elected also as the Board Secretary. Since then, under their able leadership, the board has made some significant innovations that have greatly improved the administration of the school. Among the innovations are: 1) A monthly board meeting is held during which problems affecting the operation of the school are brought-up and as a result, solutions are worked out; 2) Resolutions have been adopted to: (a) to update the standard of teaching; (b) to adjust the salaries of the teachers to their required level; (c) to employ well-qualified and competent teachers; (d) to expand the working office of the administrative and teaching staff; (e) to acquire more equipment for use in the office; (f) to convene from time to time a teacher-board joint meeting with a view of airing problems and seeking solutions to such problems; (g) to offer scholarship to poor but deserving students.

PTA Through the encouragement of the Board of Trustees, a Parent-Teacher Association was organized in 1976. Elected as officers were: Mrs. Rebecca Sycip, President; Mrs. Bella Sybico, Vice-President; Mrs. Anesia Sy, Treasurer. Composed of parents and guardians of students and all teachers of the school, and holding meetings once every two months, the PTA has brought out and solved problems which have relevance to the training of the students as well as to other matters that could help improve the operation of the school. A very significant project that was undertaken by the PTA is the raising of funds to put up an artesian well and water tank to solve the water problem encountered by the school. The project was completed sometime in July 1978.

For the past half-century, Holy Cross High School has been rendering a dedicated educational service to the community by producing batch after batch of graduates who later became successful in their chosen fields of endeavor. Inspired by the enterprising spirit of its founders, encouraged by its past accomplishments, sustained by the continuous support of the Chinese community, heartened by the devoted performance of its administrative and teaching staffs, strengthened by its steady growth of student enrolment, and guided by the progressive policies of its Board of Trustees, Holy Cross High School will continue to pursue its noble mission of training boys and girls who could later become valuable assets to our society and could contribute ably their abilities in the task of nation building.

朗碼倪地市(Dumaguete City)位居菲律賓島國的中部地區，是維薩亞斯群島(Visayas)中內格羅斯島上(Negros)東黑人省(Negros Oriental Province)的省會。是本省政治、經濟、文化、交通、觀光事業的中心。面積三千五百五十一公頃。人口十餘萬，其中約百分之十有華人血統。地名源由英文字dumaguit演變為Dumaguete。其意義有二種解釋：其一，百餘年前南部海盜常來本地搶劫綁人。其二，本地有吸引人作長久居留之魅力。在西班牙統治時代為宿霧之一部份，後成為一鎮，直至一九四八年十一月二十四日方成為市。

朗碼倪地是一個濱海的小都市，亦為一綠色都市。該地的山光水色，極富詩情畫意。尤其是碼頭沿岸，有相當長的水泥堤岸，行人道旁有草坪，供人遊憩。附近有許多西班牙式的高尚住宅，古色古香，美輪美奐。道旁尚有壯觀的阿加樹大樹，點綴其間，別有一番情趣。海風輕揚，藍天白浪，柔美如夢，令人流連忘返，亦令人深深地體驗到「前人種樹，後人享福」的意義。沿海到處都有可供人游泳的海灘，岸上觸目皆是富有熱帶情調的椰樹。海底的海洋景緻，更是多采多姿，五光十色，不知引來了多少喜愛潛水遊戲的遊客。

本地居民承襲了西班牙浪漫熱情的傳統習俗，他們較其他東方人更懂得美化人生，享受人生。每年十一月二十五日是本市迎神賽會(Fiesta)的日子。迎神賽會主要是慶祝他們所崇拜之神的誕辰，以表達他們對神的感恩。在迎神賽會時，最能表現他們的人生哲學。除上教堂之外，尚有選美、遊行、宴會、舞會等節目。市面熙熙攘攘，顯得格外熱鬧，家家戶戶不論貧富，必定各盡所能地準備著在這天大宴賓客。在宴會中，烤豬與酒是餐桌上不可少的美味食品與飲料。男女老幼盡情地歡樂，慶祝之熱烈往往較聖誕節更有過之而無不及。市內各區亦有各區迎神賽會的日子，雖然是大同小異地慶祝，但是大家仍樂此不疲。附近市鎮的遠到賓客，更是扶老攜幼地全家總動員。居民百分之八十信奉天主教，宗教似乎成為他們生活的中心，一切婚喪喜慶，均以宗教儀式開始，以宴會結束。本地居民多操維賽亞方言及英語。多數人愛美、樂天、老實忠厚，惟並不落伍，對於選美、運動、音樂、演說、話劇，各種文藝活動，常有出眾的表現。菲人為了寵愛太太，凡事都得跟賢內助好好商量，所以本地婦女是自由快樂的女性，是家庭中的皇后。在此小城市中，還有一項最令馬尼拉客人羨慕的生活方式，就是一般人都滿足於現狀，不慌不忙悠然自得地生活著，尤其是膾炙人口的人情味。此外菲人亦少有輕視外人之舉，地方平靜，罕有劫掠暴行之事，華僑均能安居樂業，故近年來，常有外地華僑遷來本地謀生。自從一九零一年詩里曼大學(Silliman University) 在本市建校後，教育水準普遍提高，成為菲國南方學術風氣最濃厚之地，並有學府都市之美譽，使本市更加引人入勝。

朗市交通除私人汽車外，以三輪車主，往來自如，而且車資便宜。對外交通設有飛機場、碼頭、巴士站，四通八達，尚稱便利。本省的經濟是以農為主，故不論鄉村都市，一片翠綠。農產品以椰子、甘蔗為大宗，其次為玉蜀黍、香蕉、芒果和米。因為濱海，部分居民亦以漁撈為正業。此地港口可停泊外國輪船。三大輸出品是椰乾、蔗糖、柁木，可以賺取不少外匯。市內公私銀行計有數十家。大醫院三家。規模較大之天主教堂二座。為華僑所有之天主教堂，基督教堂及道教寺各一座，均具規模。其中道教寺稱鐘圖善壇，位於黃必成海邊，背山面海，遠離塵囂，是一座頗為莊嚴的中國式廟宇，亦為本市名勝，常有遠道信徒前來參拜，誠心祈福。本市公園位於大天主教堂與市政府之間，中央矗立著菲律賓國父黎剎紀念碑。四週環繞著十餘株大芒果樹，園內佈置賞心悅目，簡潔可取。是本市遊覽消遣勝地之一，亦為普通集會之場所。由於受西班牙風格的影響，附近各小市鎮亦都是教堂、公園、行政中心，三位一體，少有分離的。省政府大廈位於本市商業區與飛機場之間，建築宏偉，氣派不凡。大廈前有一片面積廣大的草坪，草坪中建有噴水池一座，入夜燈火閃爍，噴出彩色的水花，瑞麗似錦，燦爛奪目。草坪周圍繞著一些大芒果樹，有如一群雄壯無比的衛士，保衛著這片神盛的草地。最前方為一司令台，每逢國家或省市盛大慶典皆以此地為集會場所，並用為大遊行之起點。教育方面，本市兩所大學是詩里曼大學(Silliman University)和建基大學(Foundation University)，兩所學院是聖保羅學院(St. Paul College)與大天主教堂附屬學院(Dumaguete Cathedral College)，三間私立中學是中國中學(Holy Cross High School)，中山中學和聖羅威斯中學(St. Louis High School)，此外尚有一些公立學校。全市大小電影院七間，裝有冷氣設備者僅兩間。較具規模可供遊客住宿之旅館十餘家，其中有兩家旅館在郊外均另建有海邊旅社，以草舍茅亭為號召，別具風味，類似夏威夷海灘，不但可以欣賞到自然的美景，又可享受到弄潮戲水之樂，故成為一般遊客樂意光臨之地。餐館較大的有好宴、超群、金龍等中式速食店及餐廳，另外也有西式速食連鎖店Jollibee、McDonald's 以及Scoobys等。

民眾團體在朗碼倪地社會中發揮著重要的功用。有獅子會，扶輪社，青年商會，國際規矩會，基瓦尼司會，婦女會，青年會，紅十字會，防癆協會，各校設立之教師家長聯誼會和其他較小的福利團體無數。在此小城市中竟有這麼多的民眾團體，可以想像到本市居民是多麼地富有活力及福利觀念。

詩里曼大學(Silliman University)創立於一九零一年八月二十八日，最初為美國人主辦，是菲國南部最古老的大學。目前設有文理、法、商、神、工、護士等學院。其中尤以教育、文理、法律及工程最為特出。全校學生近三萬人，其中甚多不遠千里而來就讀的外埠學生，外國留學生亦不乏人，故每逢寒暑假期間，該地人口之變動率甚大。全校面積共計六十六公頃，校內建築物大小計有一百七十七座。包括基督教堂一座。此外尚建有四層樓之新式附屬醫院一座，為本省最大醫院。數十年前新建，可容納觀眾千人戲院式之冷氣大禮堂一座，被譽為南島之文化中心。另有一座規模宏大之圖書館。校內環境優美，道旁古木參天，園中綠草如茵，到處充滿寧靜舒適的氣氛。校舍建築藝術，設備完善，而且自供電力，稱為著名全菲之學府之一，大可受之無愧。

描仁社鎮(Valencia)為市外名勝區之一，位於高山之上，風景宜人，氣候涼爽，土壤肥沃，是朗市的花圃。由朗市驅車前往約二十分鐘車路，沿途椰樹夾道，花木繽紛，惟山路竣陡，尤其在下坡時，甚覺提心吊膽。附近有一山泉游泳池，介於兩山之間，池水清涼，是盛夏消暑的好去處，星期假日，遊人很多。沿山徑蜿蜒而上，約再費二十分鐘，可抵著名的觀望營(Camp Look-out)，該地素有小碧瑤之稱，攀登其上，漫山都是蒼勁松林。遊目遠眺，朗碼倪地山水之勝盡收眼底，真有海闊天空之感，使人心境開朗，精神振作，故亦為遊客津津樂道之勝地。

巴林濱侖礦泉(Palinpinon Hot Springs)，亦位於描仁社鎮，遊人可利用硫磺溫泉烹煮雞蛋取樂，十分鐘即可大快朵頤。目前政府正投資開發此地熱能，一旦完成，將設立發電廠，供給全省廉價電力。屆時朗碼倪地工商業之發展，定能飛黃騰達，前途未可限量矣。

華僑祖先，離鄉背井歷盡艱難險阻，從祖國泛海到菲島來謀生。他們披荊斬棘，忍苦耐勞，克勤克儉，在菲島各地創業謀生。經過慘淡經營，事業逐漸發展，日積月累，終能為下一代奠定鞏固的基業。

此種積極進取的創業精神，亦反映於本市的華僑先賢。一百至五十年前，本市僑店由寥寥數家增至二十餘家，同僑由數十人增至百餘人。店鋪由小型逐漸擴展成為規模較大之商行，創下了繁榮的僑社。他們安份守己，安居樂業之餘，自關心到僑社的福利。首先組織商會，除促進同僑感情外，同時又能群策群力，舉辦救國護僑，拯災恤鄰，排難解紛等慈善之工作。繼而購置開闢義山，使同僑於亡故時有安葬之所。後又創辦僑校，使同僑子姪有受中菲教育之機會。今日巍然矗立介於「山沓加達仁那」及「洛迷巴難甲」街之中國中學之前身，即八十年前本市華僑先賢所創辦之朗嗎倪地中華學校。此僑校之創辦，不僅造福本埠華僑子女，有進德修業之所，並嘉惠散居附近各小市鎮之華僑子女，亦可前來就讀。

朗嗎倪地中華學校成立於公元一九二八年七月十五日。創辦該校之最大目的為使華僑子弟除受當地英菲文教育外，並得受中國優美文化之薰陶。以便在思想與生活上，有個立身處世的高尚準則，藉而克紹基業，造福社會，發揚祖國文化於海外。本校校名原為朗嗎倪地中華學校，英文校名原為 Dumaguete Chinese School。後改為Dumaguete Chinese High School。一九六六年起英文校名又更改為 Holy Cross High School，以符合菲教育部菲化僑校之政策。

本校創辦發起人黃媽超、何文仲、周文陣、何達衷、江神佑、黃自勉、孫溫純、葉清在、何天送、何尼姑、陳銅城、楊玉麟、孫溫報、呂肯構、黃耀焜、王獎志諸先生皆為當時本市名商，熱心教育之傑出人士。最初禮聘周幼葆先生任首任校長，閻文銘、黃超然等任教職，以中華商會原置木屋兩座供課室及教職員住宿之用。第一學期開課時，學生凡四十餘人。

一九三一年改聘林逸民先生繼任校長。一度曾由黃媽超先生邀請埠中僑商共議重建校舍，認捐有人矣，惜因中日戰爭開始，專心致力於救國捐輸，不暇旁及。一九四一年太平洋戰爭爆發，日軍南侵，菲島淪陷，本校亦被迫停辦。

一九四二年，日軍入侵朗嗎倪地，進駐本校，對桌椅、教具、圖書、儀器等，頗多破壞，即校舍本身，亦有損失。

一九四五年，日本無條件投降，菲島光復，避難僑胞先後返埠。熱心教育人士，鑒於恢復僑教之不容或緩，遂積極籌款，修葺房舍，添置桌椅，購買書籍、文具、儀器，聘請校長、教師。在代校長高尚志先生主持下，因戰事停辦四年之本校，乃得重聞弦歌。戰後各地僑社發展迅速，朗市亦不例外。僑生數激增，加以外埠僑生亦負笈就讀本校，復校後僅四年，學生數增加至二百四十人，致校舍不敷應用，且因戰事破壞，年久失修，實有改建新校舍之必要。

一九四九年，高尚志代校長辭職，蔡志信先生接任校長職。當時本校董事會，組成建築委員會，負責籌款興建新校舍之工作。於是一面繪成新校舍圖型，一面進行募捐，除賴本埠諸僑商獻捐外，更赴外埠募捐。募捐委員為陳允和、陳天送、何文仲、薛彬良、黃石銘、陳水池、關國琚、姚貽春、黃登賢、蘇法杭、蔡志信等諸先生。承蒙各地商會會長，教育會長，及熱心僑領犧牲寶貴光陰，陪同勸募。又蒙各地熱心家踴躍輸將，眾志成城，藉得以完成盛舉。一九五零年一月二日於原址鳩工奠基，大興土木。由工程師楊安禮先生設計承包，歷時一年三個月，於一九五一年三月全座鋼骨水泥之三層樓校舍建築竣工，堪稱富麗堂皇，巍峨壯觀。校舍內包括教室，校長教職員辦公室，圖書館，大禮堂，天台等，一應俱備，校園、操場亦寬廣怡人，過去之擁擠情形遂得改善。校舍、宿舍、運動場，佔地凡二千五百五十一方公尺，設備全新，共費貳拾餘萬披索。是年三月二十九日落成之日，中菲首長，各地僑團機關、學校或賜禮品，或贈題詞，或致賀電，我駐菲大使館陳質平大使，駐納卯領事館宓錫寵領事，暨岷宿怡等各地僑領名流，乘專機於上午十時蒞埠，為新廈主持落成典禮，盛況空前。

自新校舍完成後，本校增辦中學部。蔡志信校長天性和藹，學問湛深，辦學認真，前後六年，對本校建樹殊多。一九五六年請辭，改聘傅蓮舫任校長，傅校長在校服務二年後離職。
一九五八年，天主教神父王建青應聘來校主持校務，任內延聘優良教師，整頓校風，改善課程，充實學校設備，添建三樓天台屋頂，師生受益不少。一九六九年，王校長奉調岷市，執教於仙範光啟中學，遺缺由孫化龍神父接掌。

董事長何達衷先生，連任十七年，對本校貢獻良多。一九七六年，以年事稍高，不宜過度操勞，堅請辭職讓賢。同年董事會改選，薛彬良賢哲嗣薛振中先生為董事長，黃大明律師任副座，黃登國先生任財政。薛、黃諸君盛年有為，本校來日之繼續發展，當可預卜。董事會在薛董事長領導之下，每月集會一次，商討解決有關學校之各種問題，為提高教學水準，立即調整教師薪金，聘請優良教師，增購圖書，又擴大教職員辦公室，添置新桌椅以利辦公，並召集董事、教職員聯席會議，增進雙方瞭解，並當場解決有關教職員之種種困難問題。

同年本校家長教師聯誼會成立，林慶珍夫人(薛淑恩女士)當選為首任會長，薛成僑夫人(李坤來女士)為副會長，薛振中夫人(李安玲女士)任財政。該會每二月集會一次，商討有關問題。為解決學生在校飲水問題，該會於上學年度負責籌款，捐獻水井、水塔、抽水機及飲水設備等，全部工程已於一九七八年完工，共費二萬三仟披索。

一九七七年開始，每逢學校畢業典禮，董事會頒發獎狀、獎金予對學校較有貢獻之優良教師，以鼓勵他們對學校作更大的貢獻。董事會為了幫助家境清寒的學生，設有清寒獎學金，每年都有將近百名的半費或免費學生就讀本校。為彌補該項經濟負擔，董事長薛振中先生，在黃登國與黃登傑二位董事陪同下，於一九七六年末，前往南島各埠勸募，成績斐然，將近百名之獎學金問題，終獲解決，學校經費亦得穩定。

自一九七六年起，菲化後之僑校，須依規定開辦全部英文課程，華文只能視為外國語學習。今日不少關懷華文教育之僑胞，以為僑校菲化後，華文課程刪減，華文教育之精神將隨之而喪失，其實不然，僑校菲化後，華文仍可學習，學生由學習華文，可以了解中國之過去與現在，吸收中國優良之文化道德。而且華文之重要性，並未因菲化而減退。華文在東南亞地區，流通極廣，中菲近鄰，菲人習華語者，亦年年增多，生長海外之華裔，學習華文理所當然。

菲國之友華僑教育，逾百年，朗嗎倪地之有中國中學亦八十年矣。本校經過八十年之奮鬥，由木質校舍而水泥校舍，由小學而中學，學生人數由四十餘人而增至今日之三百餘人，皆僑胞擁護及支持之成果。這一代比上一代強，下一代要比這一代更強，這是民族的進步。中華民族立國五千年，其偉大之處，即在任何環境下，均能在生存中求進步。這種刻苦創造的精神，可謂愈挫彌堅，無往不克。欲達到民族強大的境地，自宜時刻奮鬥，自強不息！今後同仁等自當兢兢業業，精益求精，以不負先人建校之初衷，而期達到教育之理想。

Brief History

Sometime in 1926, a group of Chinese-Filipino businessmen in Dumaguete established an organization known as the DUMAGUETE CHINESE OF COMMERCE (DCCC). Among the organizers were the late Mariano L. Uy Matiao, Abdon Velez, Sun ug Son, Cang Yuco, Que Tech Tuen, Santiago Chiu Bontin, Lucio Limquiaco, Jo Tian Sang, Uy Yao Khun, Sun Un Po, Ong Chiong Chi, Du Quinco and other leading businessmen.
Two years later after the founding of the DCCC, the Board of Directors thought of putting up an educational institution where the children of the Tsinoy community could learn not only the basic education but also the culture and arts of China. Thus, on July 15, 1928, the Dumaguete Chung Hua High School came into being. The late Santiago Chiu Bontin was the Chairman of the Board of Trustees and the late Chiu Yu Po was the school principal.
The school, located at corner Sta. Catalina and Noblefranca Streets, started its operation in a small one-storey schoolhouse built of wood and nipa. It was administered by a principal and three teachers offering primary education to around forty pupils. Since then, the enrollment increased until it was forced to close in 1941 due to the start of the Second World War.
After the war, the school resumed its operation and in 1951, a new concrete building was erected to replace the old dilapidated schoolhouse. A girl’s dormitory and boy’s dormitory were added to meet the housing needs of out-of-town students and finally a gymnasium was constructed for sports and other activities. In 1980, these dormitories were converted into classrooms to accommodate the increasing number of student population.
A complete course in the elementary and secondary education in both English and Chinese necessitated a change in the name of the school into Dumaguete Chinese High School during the administration of the late Mr. Chi-sin Tsai, the principal who served from 1949 to 1956. The school was again renamed Holy Cross High School in 1968 when its doors were opened to all Filipinos, during the incumbency of Rev. Fr. Joseph Wang as principal. The school became fully Filipinized after the declaration of Martial Law in 1972.
Holy Cross High School celebrates its Founders’ Day on the 15th of July each year. It celebrated its Golden Jubilee on July 15, 1978 and Diamond Jubilee on July 15, 2003.
Since 2000, the school has been managed by the Sisters of the Congregation of St. Therese of the Child Jesus from Taiwan. Sister Agnes Hsieh served as the first school directress.
As Holy Cross High School grows as a learning institution, a Montessori-based curriculum of the Pre-School Department was introduced with Sr. Nellie Gillegao as its head.

浪漫藝地中國中學訊：

本校將於七月十五日慶祝八十一週年校慶，承蒙中華民國僑委會、台北辦事處於七月四日遴派文化教師賴弘修老師到校教授中華傳統國術，屆時校慶將會有精采可期的國術展演，讓校慶活動更加豐富、多采多姿，充分展現出中國中學特有的青春與活力。

今年是台灣巡迴文化教師在本校授課的第三年，往年曾學習過民俗舞蹈及民俗體育，今年則是充滿陽剛氣息的中華傳統國術。學習內容的多樣化，使本校學生在這三年內累積了多元的文化才藝，蛻變為傳承中華文化的小尖兵。當學生們知道今年要學習傳統國術之後，在巡迴文化教師尚未蒞臨之前，學生們便常在下課時間摩拳擦掌、活絡筋骨，呈現出一副躍躍欲試的樣態，可以明顯地感受到他們迫不急待想要體驗國術的魅力。

賴弘修老師於七月四日開始至十一日共七天，在本校教授師生中華傳統國術，賴老師不僅武藝精湛，教學經驗也相當豐富，教學態度認真、不惜傾囊相授，因此學生在他如此精心的指導之下，從零基礎變成有模有樣，進步之神速讓人不敢相信，在五天內學會了舞龍、舞獅、刀術，以及劍術，支支精采，個個不同，令人為之眼睛一亮。

學生們的學習反應也十分良好，學習刀術的小六男學生達阿藍說，表演刀術時讓他看起來更加帥氣，小六女學生季阿蕾也覺得透過刀術的練習，讓她的身體變得更健康了，手臂的力量也強壯許多，而中學生錢漢良則表示，透過舞龍的練習，讓他對中華傳統文化又有更深一層的體認，他認為自己能負起此傳承文化的重責大任感到相當驕傲。其他學生們也都紛紛表示希望賴老師能夠多留幾天，非常捨不得他離開，因為他們還想從賴老師身上學習到更多的國術技巧。

七月十日學校舉辦了國術成果發表會，邀請全校師生、部分家長及來賓們一同欣賞展演，有舞獅的活潑可愛、刀劍術的矯健身手、舞龍的氣勢磅礡，一舉一動不時引起全場騷動。在這麼短的練習時間內卻能有如此精湛的國術演出，大夥兒皆讚不絕口、給予鼓勵，不僅肯定學生們的努力練習，以及僑委會巡迴文化教師賴弘修老師的辛苦教導，能有如此豐碩的成果，更得感謝中華民國僑委會在教材、師資等各方面，都給予最高的支持，並全力協助本校推展僑教。因此浪漫藝地中國中學校長陳賽琳修女代表全體師生向僑委會致上最誠摯的感謝，更期待來年仍有機會學習其他中華民俗藝術、體育等，使在海外的華裔新生代能對自己的文化有更多且更深的認識與認同。
